The Kerala police have continued their attempt to trace the three more undertrial prisoners who escaped from Kasargod sub-jail on Tuesday.
The police visited Bovikkana in Kasargod district on Wednesday, based on the information that three strangers had enquired for a lake nearby which is open for bathing. Despite the continuous search, the police could not trace the escapees.
The four undertrials namely Mohammad Iqbal (32), Mohammad Rashid (32), Rajan (62) and Rajesh (35) had escaped from the jail on Tuesday early morning.
Based on the tip off, the police succeeded in capturing Mohammad Iqbal on the same evening.
Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Director General of Police (Prisons) Dr Alexander Jacob said that the police have speeded up the process of nabbing the escapees and they will be shifted to Kannur sub-jail soon after the arrest.
Of the 53 undertrial prisoners in Kasargod sub-jail, 20 were shifted to Kannu jail recently and rest of them will be shifted on Thursday, he said.
Citing two coconut trees and a electric pole adjacent to the jail as the reason for the escape, the DGP said that coconut trees and the pole should have been removed from the location long back.
Two guns and 12 lathis have been given to the security police in the sub-jail.
“We have submitted a proposal to the State government to sanction district jails to Kasargod, Wayanad and Idukki districts as they lack the district jails and we are waiting for a positive response,” he said.
