A video of a provocative speech by Mufti Mustak Maqbooli during the protest had been circulated on social media. Thus, the police are looking out for him also.

The arrested have been identified as Suhail alias Syed Suhail, Rahil Pasha and Ayan of Shanthi Nagar; Syed Sadiq and Shoaib Pasha of Ghousia Nagar; Sadiq Pasha and Arbaz Sharif of Rajeev Nagar; and Ajaz of Sathya Nagar in Mysuru.

The investigation of the case was delegated to the CCB Police by Police Commissioner Seema Latkar on Tuesday.

A case has been filed against 1,000 unnamed persons for the attack. The CCB Police have reportedly identified over 60 persons and have taken 10 of them into custody for inquiry.

The Police have taken over 10 DVRs of CCTV cameras around the police station, to collect evidence of the stone pelting.

The commissioner has formed various teams to look out for the other accused.

Police sources said among the stone-pelters, most of them were in the age group of 15 to 20 years. Most of them have fled their homes while leaving behind their mobile phones, as the police started the investigation.

DKS defends police action

Defending the actions of Udayagiri police in a derogatory meme row, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said, “Whatever others say is not important. I assert, as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, that the police have not committed any mistake.”

He was speaking to media persons in the city on Wednesday. Shivakumar said that the cops, who came under attack from a mob after they arrested the person allegedly responsible for the meme, had discharged their duty well.

“Even though a few police personnel, including a couple of higher officials, sustained injuries, they have taken timely action. I am with our police,” he added.

Replying to a question, Shivakumar, said, “Those who pelted stones were Muslim youth and minors in the age group of 14 to 15 years. They do not listen to even religious leaders. However, leaders and seniors tried their best to control the mob. At least, the police had some protective gear. But the people there were helpless.”

The DCM was in Mysuru after participating in the 13 Kumbha Mela at the Triveni Sangama in T Narsipur town on Tuesday night.
