Eight students, including six girls, were today killed and 13 others injured when the van in which they were going to their school collided with a private bus in Udupi District, police said.

The Omni van, which was ferrying students to their school, was hit by a private bus at the Movadi crossing on National Highway 66.

Three students reportedly died on the spot and five more later at the hospital. The condition of one student is said to be critical.

All students were studying at the Don Bosco School in Kundapur. Thirteen persons, including the driver of the van, were injured in the mishap.

While six injured had been admitted to a hospital in Manipal, the rest at Kundapur, police added.
