Fear gripped Shantigeri and surrounding villages near Suntikoppa of Kodagu district after residents spotted a herd of elephants in daylight.

Farmers in the region, who have already lost their crops, are now more worried due to the menace of wild elephants. The rise in temperature in the last few days has affected the coffee crop.

Labourers in the coffee plantations, who noticed the elephants rushed to safety. Forest officials visited the spot.

People in the nearby regions are not sending their children to schools due to fear of wild elephants. A herd of wild elephants was seen near the backwaters of Harangi in Yadavare village.

Anekadu Forest Officer Anil D’Souza said that the wild elephants sneaking into the residential areas were being driven back into the forest. He said people should not try to chase the elephants.
