It is located about nine km away in the K Nidugane Panchayat. Abbey means waterfalls in the Kodava language, formerly known by the name Jesse Falls. The Madikeri mountain stream leaps down a height of 21 meters into a pool of churning water, which then flows down as a stream. The water in white foaming torrent comes down over the hard rock from a height. It then splits into three main streams, the one on the left carrying the largest volume of water.
One can hear the roar of the waterfalls as one approaches it through the narrow forest trail, which is separated from the Abbey private estate. During the rainy season, one needs to look out for snails, which abound on the wet trail. Barriers restrict access to the waterfall and visitors are advised not to venture into the waterfall site. A small bridge is constructed over the downstream so that visitors can enjoy the waterfalls in all its glory.
“Small is beautiful” applies to Abbey Falls located amidst enchanting hills, forests and plantation. The drive from Madikeri is itself scenic with a view of hills, valleys, forests and plantations. The location seems to be a favourite among Kannada filmmakers. How to get there: By vehicle from Madikeri. Autorickshaws charge Rs 160 for the up and down trip.
When to visit: Any time. Monsoon months of June and July are ideal when there is a large volume of water cascading. Parking is available. So are toilets and dhabas. A fee of Rs 10 per vehicle is collected at the entrance as parking fee by the gram panchayat.
