The cake mixing ceremony organised by Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration under Manipal University was a celebration of this ritual, reminding how close Christmas is.

A table full of cashews, walnuts, almonds, pistachio, raisins, black currants, dates, apricots, prunes, brandy, rum, silver coins, a ring and a thimble is what goes into the big mix.

After chef Vasanthan Sigamany read out a brief history of the tradition, the faculty members of the institute along with the WGSHA principal, P Gopalakrishnan and Sports Authority of India Director Rachana Govil did the mixing. The chef read out the significance of the silver coins, ring and thimble. The coin promises riches, the ring suggests marriage and the thimble hints at a saintly, perhaps single, life. Carols in the background, completed the atmosphere. The mix was put into airtight bags and left to mature for a fortnight after which it is baked. These cakes will be up for sale at Fortune Inn Valley View from December 16, informed a release.
