Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Saturday that practising yoga is essential for overall mental and physical well-being and has benefitted him ever since he has been doing it.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of Karnataka Yoga Abhiyana programme organised by Karnataka Olympic Association and Shwasa Yoga Samsthe at Kanteerva Stadium, he said: “Saints and gurus have been practising yoga since ancient times. To be healthy and obtain mental peace, everyone should practise yoga and also pranayama.”

"I am 67 years old and for the last three months, I have been doing yoga. It has helped me and brought lot of changes in me. I was suffering from diabetes but now it is under control. Pranayama is a medicine for physical and mental well-being,” the chief minister added. Tourism Minister R V Deshpande, who was present at the event, said talks are on to set up yoga centres at tourism spots in the State. The education department has also discussed the idea of including chapters on yoga in school syllabus, the minister added.

Meanwhile, under the Abhiyana programme, yoga will be taught at private and government education institutions across the State for one-and-a-half years.
