Condemning the hike in fuel prices and opposing the new farm laws implemented by the Central government, Somwarpet Block Congress staged a protest in the town on Monday.

Addressing the protestors, District Congress Committee member K M Lokesh alleged that the new farm laws are implemented only to hand over the agricultural sector to corporate companies.

“From the last two months, the farmers have been protesting in Delhi while the government is trying to suppress them. The Prime Minister is not listening to the farmers.”

He further said that the prices of petrol and diesel are skyrocketing. The LPG subsidy has been withdrawn.

Labourers, farmers and other financially backward communities are deprived of government facilities, he added.

Block Congress president B B Satish said that the Karnataka Land Reforms Act 1961 has been made almost inactive by both the Central and state governments. This will make the farmers landless in the next few years.

The protesters took out a protest rally from the party office near Kakkehole to the tahsildar’s office. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the governor through tahsildar Govindaraju.

Kodagu District Congress Committee president K K Manjunath Kumar, general secretary S M Changappa, INTUC state committee vice president N M Muttappa, district Wakf Board Advisory Committee chairman K A Yakub, Block Congress secretary Sunil and others were present.
