The last rites of Shivakumar, a farmer who committed suicide allegedly fearing loss of his land for a garbage processing plant, were performed at Kattigenahalli in the taluk on Sunday evening.
The two-day deadlock between police and the farmers ended on Sunday following a reconciliatory meeting held by Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, the president of Karnataka Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene. The farmers were staging a dharna keeping the body, opposing setting up of a garbage processing plant at Ajjagondanahalli.
As many as eight persons including a sub-inspector were injured after villagers threw stones while the body was being shifted from district mortuary to the Kattigenahalli on Saturday night. Police had to fire in the air to disperse the crowd.
Chandrashekhar described the incident “unfortunate” and said that the government would provide all sorts of benefits to the family of Shivakumar. Assistant Commissioner K L Anand said that violence cannot be a solution for Tumakuru’s garbage problem.
The last rites were performed at the garden of Shivakumar in the presence of senior police officers.
