Fight against commercialisation of medical care, students told

Seniors who have worked for the growth of Yenepoya Dental College were felicitated during the silver jubilee celebrations of the college at Deralakatte on Monday.

Medical care industry, along with its rapid expansion, has become commercial where love, compassion, sympathy, and empathy have no place and is unethical, cruel, and inhuman, said Dr P Mohamed Ali, chairman, MFAR.

He was speaking at a silver jubilee celebrations of Yenepoya Dental College (YDC) ‘Yensteller’ here on Monday, and called upon the students to fight ag­ainst this evil of commercialisation. The students should be alert and updated with recent findings.  

Education sector is in a process of rapid transition. Technology-enabled teaching and learning processes have revolutionised its structure. The skill of Charaka Maharshi, the father of the Indian traditional surgical procedures is replaced with the finest forms of robotic surgery now. A surgeon sitting in one continent can perform a surgical procedure on a patient in another continent with the help of the latest technological devices, he said.

“It is time for us to ask a question to ourselves whether we have the facilities and expertise to adopt these changes,” he said.

Dr Anil D’Cruz, director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, said the number of cancer cases were less 20 to 30 years ago. About 25% of the people suffer from mouth cancer. Dental colleges should create awareness in checking the mouth cancer.

Yenepoya University chancellor Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi said the research centre of the university does focuses on research in basic sciences and advanced work on protein-based work and stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine. “We will further strengthen our research activities in emerging areas like 3D printing technologies, omics-technologies, patient-relevant clinical and translational research. We have plan to establish an Innovation and Incubation Centre to strengthen our research networking.”  

Prof Dr N Shridhar Shetty, Dr Thomas C Thelly, former founder principal of Yenepoya Dental College, Dr B H Shripathi Rao, dean, YDC, Dr Akther Husain, secretary of Islamic Academy of Education, Dr B R R Verma, former HoD of Periodontology YDC , Dr Shama Bhat, HoD, dental materials, were felicitated on the occasion.
