Fisheries Minister Abhayachandra Jain on Wednesday said fishermen who were promised 200 litres of kerosene per month per boat for a period of nine months have been given their quota for the last two months.

“The Central government had stopped supplying subsidised kerosene across the country. As a result, the Food and Civil Supplies department could not supply the monthly quota to fishermen. We finally convinced the chief minister and provided an allocation of Rs 6.15 crore per month for the market price purchase of kerosene from MRPL, to supply to the fishermen,” he said.

At present, the market price for kerosene is Rs 56 per litre.

Meanwhile, the government has put an embargo on fishing for the next three months on account of the monsoon season.

Fishing operations will start from September onwards.
