Five policemen, including the Sub Inspector (SI) and the assistant SI of the Aldur police station in the district, have been suspended, after a woman who was in their custody filed a complaint that she was gang-raped by three of them in Bangalore recently.

Pratap Reddy, West Zone Director General of Police (DGP), told a press conference that the personnel suspended were SI K R Shivakumar, ASI Nandini Shetty, constables K B Mahesh, Gururaj and Krithika.

Cases have been registered against the accused under various sections of the IPC. The sub-inspector and the victim had undergone medical tests. The DGP said test reports were expected in a couple of days and that the accused would be arrested if the rape was established.

Chikmagalur DySP S R Nayak will be the investigating officer for the case.

The victim, a resident of Vijayapura in the town, was arrested on the charge of stealing a gold chain at Mavinkere of Mudigere. She had subsequently sold the chain in Bangalore, where she was taken in a bid to recover it. The three accused policemen allegedly raped her at a lodge there.
