Five youths drown in two accidents

Three friends - Narayana (26), Mahesh (25) and Manikantha (25) - drowned in Hirekere tank near Honganur at Santhemarahalli in Chamarajanagar district on Tuesday. They were residents of Chatipura in Chamarajanagar taluk.

It is said that Hirekere, the biggest tank in the district, was filled to capacity as water was flown to it through Kabini canal under the lift irrigation, recently.

The trio had gone for fishing in the tank. Since they could not catch any fish, they decided to swim.  

Mobile phones, bicycles and clothes of the deceased were found on the banks of the tank. Family members, who went in search of the youths, found Narayan’s body.

Bodies of Mahesh and Manikantha were also fished out with the help of fire personnel later.

Narayan, Mahesh and Manikantha were friends since childhood and had completed their degree course together. Mahesh and Manikantha were married recently. A complaint has been registered at Ramasamudra East Police Station.

In the other incident, Shivanaga (17) of Holalu village and Kiran (18) of Hadagali, who went to swim in Tungabhadra river near Hirebannimatti village, in Huvinahadagali taluk  drowned on Wednesday.

It is said that they had gone to attend a wedding in the village. The body of Shivanaga has been recovered, while Kiran’s body is yet to be fished out.

The National Natural Disaster Management team and expert swimmers from Anguru are assisting in the task. Tahsildar Basavaraj Somannavar and police sub-inspector Girish Naika visited the spot. A case has been registered at Hirehadagali police station.
