Belagavi: Ghataprabha police arrested four accused including sibling of a person who was found murdered near Kalloli village in Gokak taluk on November 7, last.
Investigations revealed that the elder sibling conspired with three others to murder the victim to get Rs 50 lakh life insurance claim as himself had made the insurance policy and was nominee.
Superintendent of Police Dr Bheemashankar Guled informed reporters here on Wednesday that a persons body was found in decomposed state and infested with maggots on November 7, and identifying the deceased was difficult. Doctors who conducted the postmortem informed that the person had been murdered as there were injuries on his body and murdered could have taken place four to five days prior to the body being found.
Investigating teams swung into action and based on inputs received from locals, suspects were detained and inquired separately. As their statements did not corroborate, we suspected foul play. Person murdered was identified as Hanmant Gopal Talwar (35) resident of Kalloli. During investigations it came to the fore that his elder sibling Basaravaj had conspired to murder his brother for claiming Rs 50 lakh of life insurance as he had seen his cousin benefitted after demise of his uncle. Basavaraj had himself paid premium of the life insurance as the amount will be less due to age factor and himself became its nominee, he said.
Basavaraj assured to pay Rs 8 lakh to Bapu Shaikh and Rs 5 lakh each to Irappa Hadaginal and Sachin Kantennavar if they helped him murder Hanmant. All accused took Hanmant with them to the remote lands near Kalloli and made him drink liquor. Later they assaulted him with iron rods and murdered him. To misguide police that the murder happened over illegal felling of sandalwood trees, they dumped few logs near the body. While Basavaraj stayed in the village, three other absconded, he stated.
Based on the inputs received, accused were detained and during interrogation confessed of their acts. They have been arrested and produced in the court, Dr Guled stated.
Ghataprabha police are investigating.
