Four labourers, including two women, were buried alive when a mound of mud from a hillock caved in on them at Sampebail of Idagundi village in the taluk on Monday.

Deceased have been identified as Bhagyashree Yadage (21), Lakshmi Doyipade (38), Santosh Doyipade (18) and Maalu Doyipade (21), all residents of Hosahalli near Kiravatti in the taluk.

The incident occurred when the labourers were resting after clearing a portion of mud at the hillock at a farm owned by Manjunath Nagappa Bhat. While four labourers were buried alive under the mud heap, three others had a narrow escape.
