The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has faulted the Food and Civil Supplies Department in planning and installing electronic weighing machines in fair price depots.

The CAG has said the faulty 3,866 machines resulted in unfruitful expenditure of Rs 11.52 crore.  The report said that the department had planned to install machines in phases and issued purchase orders for 6,149 machines by spending Rs 31.04 crore. Of these, 3,866 were supplied and Rs 11.52 crore was paid last March.

The department’s records revealed that only 25% of the machines were transferring data to the central server which too was incomplete. The expenditure was unfruitful due to lapses in planning and implementation of the project.
