A gas tanker, belonging to Bharat Gas company, overturned on the busy College Circle where two national highways converge in the town, affecting traffic for several hours.
The gas tanker, placed in a lorry, overturned when the driver lost control of the vehicle while overtaking another vehicle. Residents and road users panicked fearing leakage of gas. However, the company’s manager Velumani allayed such fears. “The gas tanker weighs 18 tonnes and there is no leakage of gas. We called a crane from Mangaluru to take it to a godown in Hubballi,” he added.
The gas tanker was being taken to Satara in Maharashtra from Mangaluru. Tension prevailed in the area for more than 10 hours. The police had a tough time controlling the movement of vehicles. A case has been registered against tanker driver A B N Christopher in this regard.
