The Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard, here, has turned into a temporary shelter for agriculture labourers from various villages.

Thanks to the good produce of ginger, the labourers, along with their family members, comprising children and women, have arrived in hordes, along with necessary utensils, stoves, etc, to camp in Hassan for a while.

Children and men are seen snuggled up to sacks of the produce, while women are busy preparing dinner, using firewood. However, these labourers are not shelterless as they either have a small stretch of land or a house in their native place.

Villagers, especially those belonging to Bhovi community, have arrived in large numbers from Madihalli, Hagare, Kalasapura, Sakarayapatna, in search of jobs.

As harvesting of ginger crop is under progress, the demand for labourers is on the rise. Though ginger is being harvested in their villages also, daily wages are lower there, so they have been attracted to Hassan.

As usual, it is the middlemen who decides their work and wages. But, as there is good price for ginger this year, they hope that they would not be disappointed for some more days and that as they would get work and good wages.
