Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Kota Srinivas Poojary alleged that the state government was celebrating Tipu Jayanti to appease the minority community.

He was speaking at a protest rally, organised by BJP, to condemn the coalition government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti here, on Friday.

He termed Tipu as a religious fanatic and being cruel towards Hindus. He accused state government for being adamant in its decision to celebrate the Tipu Jayanti.

Although 104 MLAs, 17 MPs and 18 MLCs are totally against the celebrations, the state government is going ahead with its decision to observe Tipu jayanti.

“The structure of the government is bicameral and hence, the state government is bound to respect the opinions of the opposition,” he added.

The majority people are also dissatisfied with Tipu jayanti, he pointed out.

District BJP president Mattar Ratnakar Hegde said in spite of opposing Tipu jayanti in the past, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has no way but to go ahead with the celebrations. He has to listen to his coalition partner, Congress, in order to stay in power.

He alleged Tipu was anti-Hindu and massacred them brutally. He was also involved in forceful conversion.
