The state government has decided to institute the Mahaveer Award from next year onwards, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering after presenting the Mahaveer Award, instituted by the Karnataka Jain Association and Sakala Jain Samaja, during the Mahaveer jayanti celebrations, the chief minister said the government would fund the anthology on the complete works on Jainism.

“The government is ready to set aside whatever amount is required to compile Jain literature. The government will also institute the Mahaveer Award for individuals who have contributed to the welfare of society, from next year onwards,” he added.

The Mahaveer Award for 2016 was presented to Sudha Murty, chairperson of Infosys Foundation. In her absence, her husband Narayan Murthy collected the award.
