Senior Advocate S Vijayshankar is likely to be appointed as the next Advocate General (AG), following the resignation of senior counsel B V Acharya from the post.

Sources in the chief minister’s office confirmed that D V Sadananda Gowda had already signed a letter in this regard which would be forwarded to the Governor on Friday for approval.

If appointed, this will be Vijayshankar’s second stint as the AG, as he served in the post from June 1996 to October 24, 1999, under then chief minister J H Patel. When contacted on Thursday evening, Vijayshankar said he had already given his consent to the post and was awaiting the official notification.

Last year, he had appeared on behalf of the Legislative Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah in a case filed by the five disqualified independent MLAs in the High Court.
