“There will be no progress and development if we stick to the historic Belur declaration which had granted more powers to grama panchayats. The GP officers and executive officers are in slumber. The legislators can ensure speedy work,” he said speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed guest of the District Journalists Association here on Friday.
Though, the government sanctioned about three lakhs houses in the villages, the grama panchayats had begun work on only 12,000 houses so far.
Hence, it has become inevitable to pass on more supervisory powers to local MLAs, he said.
He said the government has released about Rs 45 crore for development works in Hassan district. Of the total grant, Rs 16 crore is exclusively for laying roads in rural areas and Rs 20.17 crore in city, he said and added that asphalt work would begin soon.
The Government also targets to asphalt about 60 kilometres of roads in each Assembly constituency, he said.
On the woes of the staff of Hassan Medical college and their indefinite stir, he said the institution has been asked to constitute a committee comprising MLAs and director to reach a consensus.
About irregularities in the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, the Minister said he would ask the zilla and taluk panchayats to send reports on the job scheme to his office.
The MLAs would be given responsibility of these schemes too, he added.
