The State Government released Rs 30 crores for development of the city under Chief Ministers Small and Medium Towns Development Scheme and the City Municipal Council too earmarked certain amount for the improvement of graveyards.
Except construction of compound walls with some minor works at two graveyards, the CMC had no plans for the development of all graveyards- which are crying for attention. There are no compound walls, drinking water, washroom, shelters and other amenities at all the graveyards. The lack of facilities seem to be haunting dead souls too. The long pending demand to set up an electric crematorium has remained a distant dream. No efforts are made by the authorities to get the work approved from the competent department.
Hosahalli graveyard did not have the compound wall at all. There are complaints that the dogs feed on the half-burn bodies in the graveyards.
Though the CMC has constructed buildings for the electric crematoria at Kallahalli and near Mysugar factory road, the machineries are yet to be installed. The CMC president M P Arunkumar told Deccan Herald steps are underway for the improvement of graveyards and the CMC has sought tahsildhar’s permission to take up repair works. The works would be completed in a phased manner. Besides, a fresh tender will be called for setting up of the electric crematorium as the old proposal is outdated.
