The petitioner, Joseph Lalawmpuia,  a native of Mizoram studying in third semester at Department of Sociology had moved the High Court after the varsity denied him permission to appear for the examination.

The varsity had stated that his admission to the course, through five percent marks relaxation, meant for the students under ST category, will not apply for him as per the State’s categorisation.

The petitioner submitted that he has been selected under supernumerary quota, where a student from the other state universities are entitled for one seat. Counsel for the petitioner Sridhar Chakravarthi submitted that the varsity has denied the seat to the petitioner after he paid fees and appeared for two semesters. Citing the incident as against the principles of natural justice, he submitted that the student was not even served with a notice.
