The Department of Health and family welfare (DHFW) has issued a circular to its officials on identifying fraudulent BPL cards.

The Health department will deal with individuals possessing fake BPL and health cards, while the mass verification will be carried out by the Food and Civil Supplies department. M Madan Gopal, Principal Secretary, DHFW, said the department doesn’t have the authority to identify the fake cards in mass. He was responding to the press statement issued by the Karnataka Private Hospitals Forum on Lokayukta reports that 38 per cent of BPL cards were bogus.  He said the State had provided health “assurance” and not “insurance” for the schemes to be brought under the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority norms.

He said, “Revision of tariff will not be done as per the whims and fancies of a few private hospitals.” The private hospitals on strike have been warned of action if the beneficiaries are denied treatment.
