Heavy rain in Belagavi; flood threat in river Krishna

Heavy rain continued to lash Belagavi district on Monday also while flood threat loomed large in Mysuru region following the release of water from major reservoirs.

It rained heavily in Belagavi, Khanapur and surrounding areas while there was drizzle in Bailhongal, Raibag, Chikkodi, Nippani, Athani and Hirebagewadi. Rakkasakoppa reservoir, which supplies water to Belagavi city is overflowing. A bridge across rivulet Altari at Tivoli village in Khanapur taluk was washed away. Heavy rains in the catchments of river Krishna and its tributaries has resulted in 1.17 lakh cusecs water flowing into the river from Maharashtra. As much as 93,385 cusecs were released to the river from Rajapur barrage in the neighbouring state. Krishna and its tributaries have been flowing above danger mark in Belagavi district triggering flood threat. The waters of River Doodhganga have flooded the agricultural lands on both of its banks raising fear of crop loss.

There was intermittent rain in Hubballi and Dharwad. Aurad taluk in Bidar district received heavy rain since Sunday noon. Power generation began at Almatti reservoir on Monday. Superintending Engineer S B Bislapur told DH that all the six units at the power station have started power production and 290 MW of power was generated on Monday.

River Varada is in spate in Sirsi taluk. Around 400 acres of paddy field is under water in Banavasi. There was three feet of water on the bridge which connects Ajjarani village. The water level in the river is going up following heavy rain in Sorab and Hosanagar parts of Shivamogga district.

A portion of the KSRTC bus stand in Bhatkal town of Uttara Kannada district collapsed on Monday noon. However, there were no casualties. The 42-year-old structure was in a dilapidated condition.

Flood alert continued for the fourth consecutive day in Mandya. Several houses in low-lying areas were flooded due to heavy discharge from the Krishnarajasagar dam. Water has reached ticket counters at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. Balamuri, which is in full splendour, is attracting a large number of people.

Forty-five-year-old Satish was washed away while he was crossing the Hemavathi river at Nattahalli near Kadumane in Sakleshpur taluk.

Though rains receded in Kodagu, gusty winds wreaked havoc uprooting many trees in the district. Roofs of several buildings were blown away by strong winds. Movement of vehicles was affected as huge trees fell on the roads and power supply too was hit. In the last 24 hours ending on Monday at 8.30 am, Kodagu district received an average of 74.66 mm rain. Six houses were partially damaged due to sea erosion in Ullal, Dakshina Kannada district. As many as 35 families have shifted to safer areas.
