“Female foeticide and infanticide still exist in the society. The government should provide more incentives for the girl child, so that such incidents do not occur,” said Fire and Emergency Services DGP Jija Hari Singh.
She was speaking at the Daughter’s Day celebrations jointly organised by Public Relations Council of India (PRCI) in association with Bangalore University on Saturday. The event was conducted to commemorate the birth anniversary of astronaut Kalpana Chawla.
Singh’s views were seconded by K Jairaj, Additional Chief Secretary (DPAR). He pointed out that women were still vulnerable and face problems in life. “There is scope for development of women in the lower strata of the society. I have met women who are still facing financial and domestic problems in their day-to-day lives. The initiatives should be taken to bridge the gap,” said Jairaj.
Scholarships
Noted athletes, representatives from Kannada film industry as well as academicians attended the event. Scholarships were also awarded to five girl students from economically backward sections to help them pursue their education.
A grand musical extravaganza with 20 popular playback singers titled ‘Daughters of Music’ was also held. Some of the singers were Chandrika Gururaj, B K Sumithra, Shamita Malnad, Indu Vishwanath, Malathi Sharma, Kusuma and Smita Bellur.
Women from diverse fields were honoured with a citation and plaque. Among them were Vasanthi Hariprakash, B Saroja Devi, Jija Hari Singh, Reema Moudgil, Tazaiyu Ommer, Indumathi and Reeth Abraham.
