Undertrial prisoners at the district jail here, skipped food and held a protest against the assault on a few of them by the prison staff.

The staff had assaulted the prisoners who questioned the quality of food served, triggering a protest by 173 prisoners since Wednesday night.  As talks held by the officials failed, principal district and sessions judge B Sharada visited the prison on Thursday afternoon and managed to convince the protestors to drop the strike, after discussions.

Two of the inmates Ranga Pawar (24) and Vighnesh Bhosle (25), both from Maharashtra, were injured in the assault and were treated at the district hospital here. Jail superintendent S D Shodhagar refuted the prisoners’ charges and said a few prisoners had assaulted some of the jail staff on being questioned about a mobile phone found in their cell.
