A four-member team from Delhi visited Dharwad on Friday and inspected the sites on offer for housing the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The Union government has sanctioned an IIT for Karnataka and the team was in Dharwad to see if the place was suitable to establish the institute here.

The committee headed by Additional Secretary R Subramanian, IIT (Bombay) Director Devang V Khakhar, IIT (Gandhinagar) Director Sudhir L Jain, and the Central Public Works Department chief engineer Ravi Kant Soni visited the open land on offer for the IIT along the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway near Mummigatti on the outskirts of Dharwad.

The government has acquired about 937 acres of land, which is free from any legal hassles. The team members were taken to the Water and Land Management Institute premises adjacent to the High Court Bench and shown the facilities available there.

Speaking to media persons at the Police Training Centre, team leader R Subramanian said the district administration had provided several viable alternatives and the committee was impressed.
