Karnataka Transport Minister H M Revanna on Friday announced a new 'Indira Sarige' transport service that will ferry students and women at low fares in select parts of Bengaluru.

"Indira Sarige buses will hit the roads soon. We are currently discussing the pros and cons of this scheme," Revanna told a press conference here. The announcement of the new service, named after former prime minister Indira Gandhi, comes ahead of her birth centenary on November 19. The service will be run by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).

The transport utility, under the previous BJP regime, started 'Atal Sarige' named after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which catered to low-income commuters in the city.

With a fleet of more than 6,400 buses, the BMTC presently caters to nearly 50 lakh commuters in Bengaluru daily covering nearly 12 lakh kilometers.

The minister also said that buses that had clocked nine lakh kms will be replaced to improve transport service at district and taluk centres. "We are also mulling reforms in the subsidised bus passes that are issued to students and senior citizens," Revanna said.
