The district administration’s efforts to rein in cyber cafes, popularly known as internet centres, in view of national security, seems to be yielding results. Of the total 231 cafes in the district, 86 have responded, by evincing interest to register.
Sources told Deccan Herald, till now, owners of 86 cafes have collected the applications and 20 are under the process of registration. There is no time frame and is a continuous process. The one time registration fees is fixed at Rs 500.
When the process was launched a year ago, to bring in cyber cafes under surveillance, a survey was conducted to prepare the data of such service providers. In the city alone, 172 cafes were identified, followed by 59 in rural areas. The district administration also took the help of city and district police personnel in preparing the data, followed by its verification.
Government order
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner M S Archana, following a government order dated August 30, 2012, it is mandatory for the cyber cafes to register with the district administration under the Information Technology Act, 2001 (Central Act 21 of 2001), r/w rule 2(b) and rule 3 of the Information Technology (Guidelines for Cyber Cafe) Rules, 2011.
Accordingly, the centres in both urban and rural areas should register by collecting the application forms issued at the deputy commissioner’s office. The applications, along with relevant documents like rent agreement, khata of ownership and trade licence obtained from the respective local bodies. At the taluk-level, the applications are issued at the office of the tahsildars.
The registration fee should be paid with the challan provided by the competent authorities at the main branch of the State Bank of Mysore. Reminders are being sent through e-mail and SMS alerts to the remaining, to comply with the process at the earliest.
In the case of those who are planning to open the cafe, they have to enrol with the district administration first, and obtain the trade licence from the local bodies, later.
