The staff of the central prison at Hindalga in Belagavi staged a sit-in protest outside the prison premises on Thursday, against the report by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Prisons) D Roopa that illegal activities were going on at Bengaluru Central Prisons at Parapanna Agrahara in Bengaluru.

Officials and staff, wearing black armbands, staged the protest, while inmates held a symbolic protest inside, in support of Director General of Police (Prisons) H N Sathyanarayana Rao.

Prison Superintendent T P Shesh said Sathyanarayana Rao had been discharging his duties satisfactorily and had not accepted bribe from anyone. The charges made against him were aimed at character assassination, Shesh said.

Roopa has been responsible for the report appearing in the media, which has affected the credibility of the department, he said.

Staff of the central jail in Kalaburagi also staged a protest in support of Sathyanarayana Rao.
