Jumbo kills man, injures another

 A 55-year-old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant, while another person was injured at a farm in Halkuli village in Kanakapura taluk in Ramanagara district on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Mahadeva Naik, while the injured Jayaramu has been admitted to a hospital and is said to be out of danger. They are both residents of Halkuli village.

On Tuesday night, Naik along with his friend Jayaramu, went to guard their farm from wild animals. While they were taking a walk in the farm, they noticed an elephant destroying their crops. The duo went and tried to chase it away. In the melee, the elephant caught hold of Naik with its trunk and flung him away. It also went up to him and trampled him, resulting in his death, said the police.

Meanwhile, Jayaramu, who tried to save his friend, suffered from injuries. He managed to run towards the village and inform the people, who alerted the forest officials.

The elephant was chased away and Naik’s body was shifted for post-mortem, added the police.
