A 60-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant after he tried to chase away the animal, mistaking it for a buffalo, from a sugarcane field at Hulaginakoppa village in Kalaghatagi taluk, Dharwad district.

Police have identified the deceased as Ramanna Tadas. Ramanna was grazing his cattle when he saw a large animal feeding in the nearby sugarcane field.

Thinking it is a buffalo, he went to chase away the animal without realising that it was an elephant. The pachyderm attacked Ramanna and he died on the spot, police said.
