Several families from Karnataka staying near Baina beach in Vasco in Goa face the threat of eviction by the Goan government anytime in the wake of the National Green Tribunal’s verdict that houses near the beach are illegal.

On Saturday, the Tribunal delivered the verdict identifying the Baina beach as No Development Zone and had declared houses constructed near the beach as illegal.

The Tribunal was hearing a petition by families from Karnataka staying at houses near the beach.

The petition was filed after the Goan government served notices on them about demolition of illegal constructions.

“The Goan government may demolish 121 houses anytime in the wake of the Tribunal’s order. We are ready to abide by the order, but we want proper rehabilitation,” Hanumanthappa Reddy, President, Akhila Goa Kananda Maha Sangha, told DH.

He charged that the Goan government evicted thousands of families from the beach since 2004 without rehabilitating them.

Reddy took a delegation to Bengaluru to meet Chief Minister Kumaraswamy on Saturday. The meeting did not take place as he had not taken prior permission.

The delegation members handed over the memorandum at the Chief Minster’s office.

“Kumaraswamy should take up the matter immediately with the Goan government and come to our rescue,” Reddy sought.
