Kalaburagi city and surrounding areas are in the grip of severe heatwave conditions with the Mercury crossing the 44 degrees Celsius mark. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), it is a departure from normal by five degrees. The minimum temperature recorded was 27 degrees Celsius.

Due to the oppressive heat wave, normal life has been badly affected. Doctors have advised the people to take special care of newborns and infants. One doctor said cases of sunstroke were being reported in the region.

For the second consecutive day, the Mercury crossed the 44 degrees Celsius mark on Wednesday. On Tuesday, it stood at 44.5 degrees. But people in the city can get some solace from the fact that the IMD has forecast partly cloudy weather with possibility of rain or thunderstorms on Thursday. But all said and done, there will be no respite from the scorching heat in the next five days as the mercury will be hovering in the range of 43 to 45 degree Celsius.

Erratic power supply

The Gulbarga Electricity Company (Gescom) and the Water Board have made matters worse through erratic power and water supply, respectively. The people’s demand to exempt Kalaburagi from load-shedding have fallen on deaf ears.
