Bengaluru: Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Purushotham Bilimale on Friday strongly advocated for the cultural integration of all Kannada-speaking regions historically part of Akhanda Karnataka (Undivided Karnataka), asserting that cultural unity must transcend current interstate boundaries.

Speaking at a meeting with a high-level delegation from Kasaragod (Kerala), Bilimale said the time was right for the state government to draft a special action plan to strengthen emotional and cultural ties with these regions.

He welcomed the government’s decision to appoint a dedicated Border Affairs Minister for the first time, but urged the minister to broaden the mandate beyond immediate border zones to cover the overall welfare of Kannadigas living in culturally Kannada-dominant regions such as Kasaragod, Sangli and Solapur (Maharashtra).

Such a proactive approach, he said, is vital to preserving the cultural identity of Akhanda Karnataka.

The Kasaragod delegation submitted a charter of demands to the KDA chairman, focusing on cultural and educational support.

Bilimale said he would forward the memorandum to the chief minister, the border affairs minister, and the Kannada and Culture Minister, seeking increased financial allocations in the upcoming state budget.

Following the meeting, the delegation, along with Bilimale, met Kannada and Culture Minister Shivraj Tangadagi and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to press for immediate consideration of the Kasaragod Kannadigas’ demands.

Key demands

State awards for Kannada achievers from border areas.

Funds for constructing and protecting Kannada cultural monuments in Kasaragod.

Regular screening of Kannada films.

Grants for the development of Kannada-medium schools.

Parity in educational benefits for students pursuing Kannada-medium education in Kasaragod.
