The Opposition party has clinched 11 seats and could form a majority in the Upper Houseby forming an alliance with other parties.

JD(S) Legislature Party leader HD Kumaraswamy concedes defeat. "I'm disappointed that people power has lost to money power. We have suffered a setback because of the vociferous use of money by the national parties. We fought on moral grounds," he said.
Congress candidate Channaraj Hattiholi emerged victorious in the election for Legislative Council from Belgaum Local Authorities Constituency for which counting of votes was held at RD PU College in Chikkodi on Tuesday.
Results for the second seat and the about win of Congress candidate are expected to be officially announced shortly.
Congress won back the seat it had lost in the previous election.
BJP candidate Mahantesh Kavatgimath and independent Lakhan are in a close contest for the second seat.
Congress candidate Saleem Ahmed won the election to Legislative Council from the Dharwad Local Authorities constituency by securing 3334 votes, while BJP's sitting MLC candidate Pradeep Shettar was re-elected as the second candidate in the dual seat constituency.
Pradeep polled 2497 first preference votes
There were eight independents in the fray.
Out of 7476 total votes, 7450 voters had cast their votes. While 7080 votes were valid, 370 were invalid.
Both BJP and Congress have retained their seats in the Legislative Council election from the Dakshina Kannada local bodies constituency.
Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary and Congress candidate Manjunath Bhandari won the election. An official announcement is awaited.

BJP candidate D S Arun, son of legislative council former chairman DH Shankara Murthy, defeated Congress nominee and incumbent MLC R Prasanna Kumar. With this, BJP has regained the Shivamogga local authorities constituency comprising three taluks of the Davangere district.
While BJP secured 2,192 votes, Congress got 1,848, JD (U) three, and the independent candidate secured fourvotes.
Counting of votes for the election for Legislative Council for twin member Belgaum Local Authorities Constituency commenced during noon hours on Tuesday (December 14).
Strong rooms had been opened in the presence of candidate and election agents at about 7.30 am. Ballots from all the 511 polling stations that comprised 496 Gram Panchayat’s and 15 urban local bodies were tallied and mixed. Counting commenced at about 12.15 pm.
In the initial ballots counted Congress candidate Channaraj Hattiholi had been leading. BJP candidate Mahantesh Kavatgimath and independent Lakhan Jarkiholi had been trailing.
Results of the Legislative Council election for twin member Belgaum had become prestigious for the politically powerful Jarkiholi brothers on both sides of the political spectrum.
KPCC Working President and MLA Satish Jarkiholi campaigned for Congress candidate Channaraj Hattiholi. BJP MLAs Ramesh Jarkiholi and Balachandra Jarkiholi along with campaigning for BJP candidate and sitting MLC Mahantesh Kavatgimath had also campaigned for their sibling and independent Lakhan Jarkiholi.
Senior leaders of both BJP and Congress too camped in the district during the campaign period to ensure that they keep their votes intact and they were not swayed away by the opposition.
The latest report from the ground says Vijayapura-Bagalkot legislative Council (duel membership) constituency Congress candidate Sunil Gouda Patil has won by securing 3,178 first preferential votes.
BJP candidate P H Pujar too won the polls by bagging 2,203 first preferential votes.
Independent candidate Mallikarjun Loni secured 1,460 first preferential votes. However, the official results will beannounced shortly.
BJP nominee K S Naveen emerged victorious by defeating Congress nominee Somashekhar by 358 votes.
BJP obtained 2,629 votes while Congress received 2,271votes. It had been represented by Congress for the last two terms consecutively. The defeat is a setback for Congress and a morale booster for BJP.
BJP candidate M K Pranesh won the Chikkamagaluru Legislative Council election from local bodies' constituency. He won 1,188 votes. Congress candidate Gayathri Shanthe Gowda secured 1,182 votes. A total of 2,410 voters had exercised their votes in the election. Of the total votes polled, 39 votes were invalid. There were five candidates in the fray.
Congress candidate Saleem Ahmed has secured 1,274 first preference votes while BJP nominee Pradeep Shettar hasbagged 931 after the second round of counting.Independent Mallikarjun Haveri has got 394 after the second round.
Saleem had got 640 and Shettar 469 in the first round.
Suraj Revanna has been announced the winner for the MLC elections from the Hassan segment on Tuesday.
Suraj Revanna, son of MLA H D Revanna and grandson of JD(S) supremo and Rajya Sabha member H D Deve Gowda won with a margin of 1,533 votes.
Suraj secured 2,281 votes. His opponent Congress candidate M Shankar got 748 votes and BJP candidate H M Vishwanath managed to get421 votes. In all, 103 votes were declared invalid.
Bidar Legislature Council (local bodies) Congress candidate Bheemarao Basavaraj Patil Humnabad won against his nearest rival BJP candidate Prakash Khandre.
While the Congress candidate secured 1,789 votes, BJP got 1,562 votes. AAP candidate Govindrao Suryavanshi secured only 15 votes.
Of a total of 3,456 votes, 3,366 votes were polled in the election. A total of 84 votes have been declared invalid.
Counting of votes for the election for the twin-member Belgaum Local Authorities Constituency commenced in the premises of RD PU College in Chikkodi on Tuesday. Two votes were rejected before counting commenced with two voters violating the voting secrecy on the polling day and showing their ballot paper to the election agent in the premises of the polling station at Badigwad Gram Panchayat in Gokak taluk.

Two voters from Badigwad Gram Panchayat in Gokak taluk -- Ramchandra Chandappagol and Bbu Konkani -- have been accused of violating poll secrecy by showing their voted ballot to polling agents in the premises of polling station. A case in this regard has been filed with the Ghataprabha police.
District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner R Venkatesh Kumar informed that election agents of all the candidates were apprised before counting that the two votes will be cancelled.
"We have a serial number of the ballots wherein secrecy was violated and they would be kept aside upside down," Kumar noted.
