MLA Tanveer Sait opined that education should be given primary importance for the next 20 years, if a community hopes to stand the test of time.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a day-long ‘Beary literary-cultural mela’ organised jointly by the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy (KBSA) and the Beary Welfare Association (BWA), Mysore, at Jaganmohal Palace here on Monday.
Sait advised the Beary community to embrace education, so that they could learn and later teach others as well. He said that unless the community reaches the level where it can help others, it won’t be considered equal.
He bemoaned that even though every materialistic object was available within the click of a button, people are failing to maintain relations.
Observing that the Beary language is a mixture of Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Arabic, Sait said that there is a need to keep the traditions of the community alive.
Citing an example, he said that earlier, whenever a family finished work and returned home in the evening he would spend time with family. Now, with entertainment available 24x7, bonding in families are reducing, he added.
KBSA President M B Abdul Rahman said that the day-long mela was the second in Mysore. He said that the academy had organised 53 programmes in 22 months across the State.
Even though Bearys are known primarily as traders, they have led a life of peaceful co-existence with other communities, he said.
KBSA was aiming to promote education and literature among the community. Continuing, he said that the community can surge ahead only if children are provided education. BWA General Secretary Ahmad Bawa M I, Beary Sahitya Academy Registrar Umarabba, Mysore Panels Director Abdul Azeez, BWA President M A Razak, litterateur Samshuddin Madikeri and others were present.
