'Lift traffic ban on interstate highway'

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday has written to his Karnataka counterpart H D Kumaraswamy seeking restoration of vehicular movement in the Perumbadi- Makkuttam stretch, an interstate highway, following a traffic ban.

Vijayan wrote to Kumaraswamy in the wake of a one-month ban on traffic between Perumbadi and Makkuttam that has been issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu district.

Vijayan has highlighted that this will cause a lot of hardship to commuters travelling between the two states.

He added that the ban was initiated due to damaged roads and, vehicles were advised to take the Mananthavadi-Tholpatti-Kutta -Mysuru Road. Since the access to Mananthavadi in Wayanad is severely restricted, the traffic ban is bound to cause severe hardships to the commuters.

Vijayan also stated the heavy monsoons in Kerala have caused extensive damage in northern parts of the state resulting in partial damage to two access roads to Wayanad. This has resulted in a situation demanding regulation of vehicular movement between the two states.

He added that despite the damage, Kerala has not imposed any ban on vehicular movement and is working on repairing the roads at the earliest.
