The 530-gram kidney stone removed from a 46-year-old man at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal. It is the 4th largest stone recorded in the history of medical science.

Doctors at Kasturba Hospital here have removed a large kidney stone, that weighed as much as 530 gm, from a 46-year old man.

The patient from Karkala had just five days of discomfort and pain, and complained of urinary incontinence. The X-ray showed a stone 10 cm long and 8 cm wide. In other words, the stone was bigger than a tennis ball.

A four-member team of doctors, led by Padmaraj Hegde, head of Urology Department, performed the open cystolithotomy surgery to remove the stone. What surprised the doctors was the size of the stone in a patient who is not very old and had symptoms just for five days. Medical literature records only three bigger stones — from China, Hungary and Brazil, a press release said.
