Kittur declared Karnataka's 177th taluk

 Kittur on Tuesday became the 177th taluk in the State.Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar accorded the taluk status to Kittur, after inaugurating the Kittur Utsav to commemorate Rani Chennamma’s victory over the British.

The Cabinet will give its nod next week, he said.The demand for taluk status to Kittur, which has its own place in the State’s history, was decade old, Shettar said.

The Karnataka government would allocate Rs 25 crore to the Kittur Development Authority.
Several projects have been taken up at Kittur and Kakti villages in Belgaum taluk at a cost of Rs 10 crore. Also a proposal has been made for the development and conservation of Kittur fort at a cost of Rs two crore, Shettar said.

“In the past I have participated in Kittur Utsav as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and as a Revenue Minister. Today, I take part in it as the chief minister. However, I do not know in what capacity I would be part of the festival next year,” Shettar said.

Agriculture and district-incharge Minister Umesh Katti, MP Anant Kumar Hegde and legislator Vishwanath Mamani, were present.­
