The numbers of painted storks in Kokkare Bellur, at Maddur taluk in Mandya district has swelled exponentially in the last few weeks. Birds, which have migrated from across the country and various parts of the globe are seen nesting, ahead of their breeding season.
As a result, there is a steady stream of visitors to Kokkare Bellur, especially during weekends. Bird lovers can see pelicans, painted storks, herons and various other species of birds, which have migrated fron Jaipur and Jodhpur in North India, and also from Siberia and parts of Australia.
The birds usually arrive in Kokkare Bellur in December and stay upto June. The birds have already built nests atop banyan and tamarind trees, spread around the region.
