The recent in hike in petrol price was indeed steep, but the BJP government could have reduced various taxes which constitute 50 per cent of the petrol price in the State, said G Parameshwara, president, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

He told media here on Thursday that sales tax, entry tax, excise duty and cess – all add up to Rs 41 – levied on the petrol have made consumers in the State pay the highest price. Condemning the government for its various “shortcomings”, Parameshwara alleged that services under Sakaala, especially pertaining to the Revenue department were not being delivered properly.

He said lakhs of applications pertaining to land records had been kept pending in all the sub-registrar offices across the State, as surveys were not conducted due to shortage of surveyors.
