Leader of Opposition K S Eshwarappa’s decision to move an adjournment motion on renewal of mining lease of eight companies led to noisy scenes in the Legislative Council on Monday.

On the defensive over the extension of mining leases, the Congress claimed Eshwarappa had moved an adjournment motion in the previous legislature session but the chairman, D H Shankaramurthy, overruled the objection.

Eshwarappa justified moving the adjournment motion again, saying the chief minister had not replied to his questions in the last session. “After I wrote an open letter to the chief minister, he forwarded it to the law department which sent it to the Department of Mines and Geology (DMG) to reply. Accordingly, the DMG has said that the renewal, which has been done without issuing a notification, is invalid and should be quashed. Therefore, there should be an adjournment motion on this,” he said.

Shankaramurthy said he would allow a discussion on the subject under rule 68.
