A 51-year-old head constable belonging to the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) shot himself to death at Gangibavi here on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Maheshwarappa, of the 10th battalion. He hails from Hiregangur in Channagiri taluk of Davangere district.

He shot himself in the chest while he was on security duty at the arms wing of the KSRP, at around 9.55 pm. The constable died on the way to KIMS  Hospital in Hubballi.

There was a dispute in the constable’s family regarding the marriage of his elder son. It is suspected that this may have influenced him to take the extreme step.

Ravi S, IGP of the KSRP, said though he was said to have been dejected over the dispute, only a thorough probe would ascertain the cause of the suicide.

Maheshwarappa had been transferred here from the 6th battalion in Shivamogga a few months ago.
