The Karnataka High Court, last month, had directed the authorities concerned to close down all stone-crushing units that operate in areas of human habitation.

According to sources, the proposed Karnataka Regulation and Control of Stone Crushers Bill will ensure that no stone crushing units are located near urban, sub-urban areas and water bodies.

It will specify the distance between two stone crushing units besides various safety and environmental precautions that the units will have to take, sources said. The units will have to comply with the standards prescribed under Environment (Protection) Act -1986. Other regulations include air pollution control measures, noise control and safety of workers from dust pollution in the units, the sources added.
