Legal literacy among mass is very much important to reduce legal hassles encountered by the public. Thus everyone should be legally literate, said District and Sessions Magistrate Narendra Kumar Gunaki.
Speaking after flagging off ‘Legal Literacy Chariot,’ a venture to spread legal literacy and to hold Lok Adalats, organised under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, Bar Association, Udupi, Revenue Department, Police Department, Labour Department and Panchayath Raj Department here on Wednesday, he said that the chariot will run across the district for nine days. Out of nine days, the chariot will move for three days each in Udupi, Karkala and Kundapur taluk.
“Both civil and criminal cases will be taken up for trial in Lok Adalat. Speedy disposal is the prime motto behind setting up of Lok Adalat. Disputes on land acquisition, bank recovery suits, motor vehicles and IPC top the list of the cases that come to Lok Adalat for trials. In the district, as many as 1,691 cases have been trialled and disposed in Lok Adalat between August and November,” he added.
He said most of the times disposal of the cases depends on public and advocates handling the cases. Sometimes lawyers do not want the case to be solved and in some other cases, the public apprehensions for insufficient compensation will leave the case pending, he said.
