On the day the Congress failed to ensure victory of one of its candidates, Lingayat leaders of the Congress assembled in Bangalore to demand the State Party president post to MLA Shamanoor Shivashankarappa.

Shivashankarappa, a senior Lingayat leader in the Congress party, had convened a meeting of his community’s sitting and former legislators to discuss the leadership issue.

As many as 14 MLAs and 6 MLCs belonging to the community had assembled at Shivashankarappa’s house soon after the results of the council elections were announced.

Even former legislators hailing from the community were present.

It was decided to take a delegation to Delhi to petition the high command to appoint Shivashankarappa as the KPCC chief and face the next Assembly polls in his leadership. Belgaum MLA P M Ashok has been asked to take appointments with Delhi leaders.

Shivashankarappa told reporters that his community legislators wanted him to head the KPCC. Does that mean Parameshwara should be made to quit? “We are not saying that. But Lingayats are feeling totally neglected in the party.

So, we want to be taken seriously. I am sure the Party will win at least 150 seats in the polls if a Lingayat leader heads the party.
