The contributions of Kittur Rani Chennamma in the freedom struggle has not been explored fully and there is a need for a detailed research on the life the queen, said eminent litterateur and Jnanpith award winner Chandrashekhar Kambara.

He was speaking at a function to mark the 188th Victory Day of the warrior queen of Kittur who had fought a battle against the colonial British in the early 19th Century.

Kambara said the 1962 movie, ‘Kittur Rani Chennamma’, depicted just a fraction of the life and personality of the queen. So, there is a need for a detailed research on her, he said.

“Her life was full of struggle and ended with her great battle against the British rule. She sensed the imperial ambitions of the East India Company three decades before the great Indian Sepoy Mutiny which is projected as the first freedom struggle,” said Kambara.

Speaking on the occasion, K R Ramakrishna, Commissioner, Kannada and Culture, said a thorough research should be done on the chieftains of Kittur Rani Chennamma and their families.
